What is a Pip?

A pip (point in percentage) is the smallest price move that an exchange rate can make based on forex market convention.

Standard Pip Values:

  • • Most pairs: 0.0001 (4th decimal)
  • • JPY pairs: 0.01 (2nd decimal)

For example, if EUR/USD moves from 1.0850 to 1.0851, that's a 1 pip movement.

How is Pip Value Calculated?

Formula:

Pip Value = (Pip Size × Trade Size) / Exchange Rate

Example:

Trading 1 lot (100,000 units) of EUR/USD at 1.0850 with a USD account:
Pip Value = (0.0001 × 100,000) / 1 = $10 per pip
