How to Recover Your MT4/MT5 Investor Password
Complete guide to finding, recovering, or resetting your MetaTrader investor (read-only) password. Essential for connecting trading journals and copy trading services.
What is an Investor Password?
The investor password (also called read-only password) allows viewing your trading account without the ability to execute trades. It's perfect for:
- Connecting to trading journals like Journal IQ
- Sharing account performance with investors or mentors
- Copy trading services that only need to monitor your trades
- Third-party analytics platforms
Important: The investor password is different from your master password. Anyone with the investor password can see your trades but cannot place orders, modify positions, or withdraw funds.
Method 1: Change Password in MT4/MT5 Desktop
If you're currently logged into your trading account, you can view or change your investor password directly from the terminal.
MetaTrader 4 (Desktop)
- Open MT4 and log into your account
- Go to Tools → Options (or press
Ctrl + O) - Click the Server tab
- Click Change next to the password field
- Select "Change investor (read only) password"
- Enter your current master password
- Create a new investor password and confirm it
- Click OK
MetaTrader 5 (Desktop)
- Open MT5 and log into your account
- Go to Tools → Options (or press
Ctrl + O) - Click the Server tab
- Click Change
- Check the box "Change investor password"
- Enter your current master password

Password Tip: Use at least 8 characters with uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols. Example: Inv3st0r@2024
Method 2: Check Your Broker's Welcome Email
When you opened your trading account, your broker sent a welcome email containing your account credentials. This email typically includes:
- Account number (login)
- Master password
- Investor password
- Server name
Search your inbox for emails from your broker with these keywords:
- "Account details" or "Account credentials"
- "Trading account"
- "Welcome to [Broker Name]"
- "MT4 account" or "MT5 account"
Method 3: Request from Your Broker
If you can't find the email or remember the password, your broker can help you reset it.
Option A: Self-Service via Client Portal
- Log into your broker's client portal (web interface)
- Navigate to your trading accounts section
- Look for "View credentials" or "Reset password"
- Some brokers display the investor password directly
Option B: Contact Support
- Contact broker support via live chat, email, or phone
- Verify your identity (ID document + proof of address)
- Request the investor password for your account number
- They will reset it or provide the existing one
Method 4: Reset via Mobile App
You can also change your investor password directly from the MT4/MT5 mobile app.
MT4 Mobile (iOS/Android)
- Open the MT4 app
- Tap Settings (gear icon)
- Tap on your account
- Select Change Password
- Choose Investor password
- Enter master password + new password
- Tap Change
MT5 Mobile (iOS/Android)
- Open the MT5 app
- Go to Settings → Trade Account
- Tap Change Password
- Select Investor option
- Enter your master password
- Create and confirm new password
- Tap Change Password
