How to Recover Your MT4/MT5 Investor Password

Complete guide to finding, recovering, or resetting your MetaTrader investor (read-only) password. Essential for connecting trading journals and copy trading services.

What is an Investor Password?

The investor password (also called read-only password) allows viewing your trading account without the ability to execute trades. It's perfect for:

  • Connecting to trading journals like Journal IQ
  • Sharing account performance with investors or mentors
  • Copy trading services that only need to monitor your trades
  • Third-party analytics platforms

Important: The investor password is different from your master password. Anyone with the investor password can see your trades but cannot place orders, modify positions, or withdraw funds.

Method 1: Change Password in MT4/MT5 Desktop

If you're currently logged into your trading account, you can view or change your investor password directly from the terminal.

MetaTrader 4 (Desktop)

  1. Open MT4 and log into your account
  2. Go to Tools → Options (or press Ctrl + O)
  3. Click the Server tab
  4. Click Change next to the password field
  5. Select "Change investor (read only) password"
  6. Enter your current master password
  7. Create a new investor password and confirm it
  8. Click OK

MetaTrader 5 (Desktop)

  1. Open MT5 and log into your account
  2. Go to Tools → Options (or press Ctrl + O)
  3. Click the Server tab
  4. Click Change
  5. Check the box "Change investor password"
  6. Enter your current master password
  7. Enter your new investor password twice
  8. Click OK

Password Tip: Use at least 8 characters with uppercase, lowercase, numbers, and symbols. Example: Inv3st0r@2024

Method 2: Check Your Broker's Welcome Email

When you opened your trading account, your broker sent a welcome email containing your account credentials. This email typically includes:

  • Account number (login)
  • Master password
  • Investor password
  • Server name

Search your inbox for emails from your broker with these keywords:

  • "Account details" or "Account credentials"
  • "Trading account"
  • "Welcome to [Broker Name]"
  • "MT4 account" or "MT5 account"

Method 3: Request from Your Broker

If you can't find the email or remember the password, your broker can help you reset it.

Option A: Self-Service via Client Portal

  1. Log into your broker's client portal (web interface)
  2. Navigate to your trading accounts section
  3. Look for "View credentials" or "Reset password"
  4. Some brokers display the investor password directly

Option B: Contact Support

  1. Contact broker support via live chat, email, or phone
  2. Verify your identity (ID document + proof of address)
  3. Request the investor password for your account number
  4. They will reset it or provide the existing one

Method 4: Reset via Mobile App

You can also change your investor password directly from the MT4/MT5 mobile app.

MT4 Mobile (iOS/Android)

  1. Open the MT4 app
  2. Tap Settings (gear icon)
  3. Tap on your account
  4. Select Change Password
  5. Choose Investor password
  6. Enter master password + new password
  7. Tap Change

MT5 Mobile (iOS/Android)

  1. Open the MT5 app
  2. Go to Settings → Trade Account
  3. Tap Change Password
  4. Select Investor option
  5. Enter your master password
  6. Create and confirm new password
  7. Tap Change Password

Troubleshooting Common Issues

"Invalid password" Error

  • Make sure you're entering your master password, not the investor password
  • Check that Caps Lock is off
  • Try copying and pasting from your broker's email
  • Contact your broker if the master password doesn't work

"Password doesn't meet requirements"

Most brokers require passwords with:

  • Minimum 8 characters
  • At least one uppercase letter (A-Z)
  • At least one lowercase letter (a-z)
  • At least one number (0-9)
  • Some require special characters (!@#$%)

Can't Find Server Tab

  • Make sure you're logged into an account (not offline mode)
  • Some broker-customized versions move this option
  • Try right-clicking on your account in the Navigator panel
